Edith, disenchanted with her three year marriage to brewer Arthur Harnham, redirects her energies into teaching Anna, her maid, to read and write. The play opens on the day of the fair from which Anna is late returning.
Anna has met Charles, a young man from London, at the fair. Before he has to return home, Charles asks Anna to write to him after they separate. Anna agrees despite knowing she cannot do so herself.
Later at Edith’s house, Anna urges Edith to write to Charles on her behalf. Edith reluctantly agrees, but has no idea of the impact upon the three of them.
Directed by Paulette Anderson, The Day After the Fair by Frank Harvey is based on the Thomas Hardy short story ‘On the Western Circuit’.
