SUMMARY:Acoustic@Davenham
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD IN AID OF BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH \nWith Graham Bell\, Racing Demon\, Arthur Marshall\, Bitter and Twisted \n‘Acoustic @Davenham is an evening showcasing some of the best acoustic/roots music from the Cheshire folk scene in the uniquely intimate surroundings of Davenham Theatre. \nGRAHAM BELL\nGraham Bell is a singer/songwriter originally from the North East of England. He takes the rich cultural heritage of the region to weave songs with humour and pathos with a gritty undercurrent which reflects the hardships endured by his forebears. \n  \nRACING DEMON\nAfter a lengthy period of mutual admiration at Sale folk club\, Simon Eales and James Cawley eventually pooled their talents and became Racing Demon. With many shared enthusiasms\, they gradually expanding their repertoire of well-crafted interpretations of material by a wide spectrum of artists –  in the process becoming staples of the South Manchester/Cheshire folk club scene –  their live stripped-down combination of voice and guitar earning them considerable acclaim. But always keen to develop\,and experiment they expanded this basic format to record the album ‘Take The Money And Run \n\, aided and abetted by North West folk legend Arthur Marshall.’ \n  \nARTHUR MARSHALL\nArthur is a folk musician of long standing (though more often sitting\, these days)\, known for playing an  entertaining mixture of serious and humorous songs\, mostly written by himself. Sometimes these have choruses and participation is always welcome\, but not compulsory! \nHe has played for many years both on his own and in bands\, performing music ranging in styles from Cajun and zydeco to Irish music\, while also running\, playing in\, and calling the dances for several ceilidh and barn dance bands. \nHe plays mostly guitar\, melodeon and fiddle; however\, several other more unlikely instruments for a dyed-in-the-wool folkie\, such as saxophones\, trombones and euphoniums\, occasionally make an appearance – you can never be quite sure… \nBITTER & TWISTED\nBitter and Twisted are a folk combo comprised of long-time songster Lizzie Rosenfield and her accompanist Dave Giles. Their eclectic musical influences range from contemporary folk and blues to the more traditional\, all entwined by decorous vocal harmonies and dextrous guitar accompaniment. \nLiz has trodden the boards for many years as a promoter within the folk world and as a shy artist and is founder of the Cheshire Folk Club. Her stature among fellow artists is well known\, indeed is unmissable! Lover of a ‘girlie song’\, Liz has gratified many and disappointed few. David’s voice washes like an ocean over Liz’s broad vocal beach\, lapping close to her but never going further than an invitation for a paddle. His tones wind around her ankles\, wetting her toes as she retreats\, succumbing to his melody as a lover at the nape of her neck\, and they make sweet music as they splash among the musical waves. \n  \nTickets £12.50 from our Ticket Shop at Ticket Source \nThere will be a raffle in aid of Brain Cancer Research \nDoors open 18:45 \nMusic at 19:30

SUMMARY:NEW! Readthrough of "Indian Summer"
DESCRIPTION:Sheila Hetherington and Bob Almquist are holding a full readthrough of a one-act play they are going to direct in December. The play was originally written for a cast of two females playing multiple roles and played in a London studio theatre. Sheila and I want to involve more actors so we are looking for a number of people to play the roles. \nThe setting is a buffet in a busy railway station (could be Crewe?) and the main running plot is the relationship between two servers in the buffet and their future plans. Interleaved with this\, customers stop by in ones and twos and speak about their lives. I want the buffet to be as realistic as we can manage with typical background sounds and to use themed music to introduce and punctuate the action as it changes from real time in the buffet to monologues ‘out of time’. \nSome parts are short and others longer\, offering opportunities for actors to try out a character without a long script to learn and some longer monologues to get your teeth into! There is also a comedy station announcer (voice only) who is new to the job and it shows! \nWe need to find out how the play reads and more importantly its playing time. \nHope you can come along! No need to book just turn up. \nBob & Sheila \n  \n

SUMMARY:Heroes by Gérald Sibleyras translated by Tom Stoppard
DESCRIPTION:It’s August 1959 and three men sit on a bench in the garden outside a home for retired military men\, somewhere in France\, planning a breakout. Philippe\, Gustave and Henri\, all war heroes\, have had enough of the tortures of their confinement: dictatorial captors\, untrustworthy fellow prisoners and far too many birthday parties. Indeed\, life in a retired soldiers’ home is almost unbearable! So\, while keeping each other company on the back patio\, they hatch a plan to escape to Indochina\, or at least a picnic under the poplars on a nearby hill. \nHeroes was written by French playwright Gérald Sibleyras as ‘The Wind in The Poplars’ over a period of about 10 years\, finally being staged in 2002. This new version of Sibleyras’s work\, re-named ‘Heroes’\, was translated (with minor amendments) by Tom Stoppard and opened in its current form at Wyndham’s in 2005 with John Hurt\, Richard Griffiths and Ken Stott. \nWinner of London’s prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Comedy\, Tom Stoppard’s adaptation of this French play is playful\, bawdy and heartbreakingly funny. \nThe Other Theatre Company bring Heroes to Davenham on Thursday 14th November nightly at 7:30 to Saturday 16th November. \nTickets at £10.00 (concessions £8.00 Thursday 14th only) are available from Davenham Players Theatre on 01606 259 596 or online at danarts.org \nDoors and Bar 7:00pm \nShow at 7:30pm \n

SUMMARY:The Laramie Project
DESCRIPTION:Ashton Hayes Theatre Club\npresent\nThe Laramie Project\nby Moises Kaufmann and Members of Techtonic Theatre Club\nIn a first sharing of a production between the two groups\, Ashton Hayes Theatre Club gives the opportunity to Davenham Players audiences to see this unique story of the reaction to a real-life event that took place in Wyoming\, USA in 1998\, when gay university student Matthew Shepard was murdered in the town of Laramie. \nThe Laramie Project tells the true story of the brutal attack of Matthew Shephard in 1989. Matthew was a gay University of Wyoming student who\, who was savagely beaten and left tied to a fence to die. His case ultimately led to the adoption of hate crime laws to be passed. \nOne year later Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Company visited Laramie six times and spoke to more than 200 people. The result is an engrossing docu-drama that testifies to the seismic impact of a hate crime on a small town to the whole of America. Nearly 20 years later it is still powerfully resonant and relevant to modern society as we know it. \nThe play also shows Americans at their sentimental best and their god-fearing worst. The Laramie Project will be told through a mix of testimony and live music and despite the subject matter this production  has a redemptive quality that will fill you with hope. \nNOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE\nTickets £10.00 (Students £8.00) online from danarts.org\nIF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS USING THE ABOVE LINK FOR BOOKING TICKETS PLEASE PHONE OUR TICKET LINE 01606 2 5959 6
