SUMMARY:EVENT REARRANGED - SEE NOTES BELOW
DESCRIPTION:THE EVENT TODAY IS CANCELLED \n\n\nPlease note\, due to adverse weather conditions there is a change to the schedule for this week. \nThe readthrough of the two Caryl Churchill plays on 13th December takes place on Zoom at 7.30pm – NOT at the theatre. There will be NO meeting on Thursday 15th December \nThe auditions for BOTH plays will be at the theatre on Sunday 18th December at 1.30-3pm for ‘Escaped Alone’ and from 3pm for ‘A Number’ \nKelly will accommodate anyone who has difficulties with these times or dates by auditioning on line . \n\nHere are Kelly’s notes on each play. You can contact the director to say you will be there or ask any question by clicking Kelly.\n\nEscaped Alone by Caryl Churchill\n\nDuration = Approximately 1 hour \nCast = Four Women in their 60s or 70s \nPlot \nThree old friends – Sally\, Vi and Lena – spend a summer afternoon (or several summer afternoons) chatting in Sally’s back garden. They are joined by a neighbour\, Mrs Jarrett\, who regularly breaks away from their group to deliver monologues describing a postapocalyptic future. Caryl Churchill’s play juxtaposes tea with catastrophe\, while exploring themes of ecological disaster\, unspoken turmoil\, and female endurance. \nStyle \nBlack comedy. The dialogue between the four women is made up of fragmented thoughts and half-finished sentences. The effect is somewhere between naturalistic and abstract\, a kind of hyper-realism. There’s a lack of stage directions and punctuation. The intention of this is to grant creative freedom to the actors and director. Add your own punctuation\, your own pauses and pacing\, shape the dialogue how you think best. \nSet and Tech \nA small island of green turf centre stage with four garden chairs and a low table set with tea and biscuits. The outskirts of the stage would look dark\, desolate and ruined\, like a derelict building that has been ransacked and then abandoned. Sound and lighting would be used to create an apocalyptic atmosphere for Mrs J’s monologues. \nCharacters \nMrs Jarrett (60s/70s) – A neighbour\, more so than a close friend\, perhaps the reason she is the only one of the group who is not known by her first name. She worked as a lollipop lady and is implied to be the most working class. She says the least in the group scenes but has the most monologues\, during which she appears to be an apocalypse survivor. \nVi (60s/70s) – The blunt no-nonsense one of the group. We learn that she was in prison for six years after receiving a manslaughter sentence for killing her husband. She insists that it was an act of self-defence. This killing led to an estranged relationship with her son. \nSally (60s/70s) – The funny bubbly host of the garden gathering. Sally is close friends with Vi. We learn she witnessed her crime many years ago. She has a crippling phobia of a cats. \nLena (60s/70s) – An anti-social agoraphobic. She is quietly struggling with depression. She finds it hard to get out of bed or to do simple things such as visit the shops. \n  \nA Number (Caryl Churchill\, 2002) \nDuration = Approximately 1 hour \nCast = Two Men\, one 35–40\, one 60+ \nPlot \nBernard has recently discovered that he is one of ‘a number’ of human clones. His father Salter confesses to him that he was once friends with a scientist who must have taken his son’s DNA and used it to create these copies. It is later revealed that Bernard himself is a clone of Salter’s only son\, who he put into childcare after the death of his wife. This clone experiment was brought about by Salter wanting a second chance at fatherhood. It comes back to haunt him when the original Bernard tracks him down. \nStyle \nPsychological sci-fi thriller. Half father/son story and half speculative exploration into the ethics of genetic experimentation and nature vs nurture. \nSet and Tech \nAll the scenes take place in Salter’s home\, a simple living room set with some futuristic touches to indicate the near-future setting of the play. No major sound or lighting effects would be required\, just blackouts for the scene changes. \nCharacters \nSalter (60s/70s) – The father of Bernard 1 and adoptive father of Bernard 2\, a clone he made of his son\, who he put into care at age four. Salter abandoned his original child because he was too grief-stricken over his wife’s death to be a good parent. \nBernard 1\, Bernard 2 and Michael Black (30s/40s) – All three characters are played by the same actor. Bernard 1 is Salter’s original son\, who has grown into an angry damaged man\, embittered that his father replaced him. Bernard 2 is naïve and sheltered\, as Salter has kept the truth of his origins secret from him until the start of the play. Michael Black is another clone of the original Bernard\, who comes to meet Salter for the first time at the end of the play. Michael is an amiable family man and teacher. \n\n\nTo see the audition texts click https://www.davenhamplayers.co.uk/escaped-alone-audition-monologues/

SUMMARY:AUDITION - 'A Number'
DESCRIPTION:Seeking One Actor to play Three Clone Characters \nDavenham Players are seeking a talented and versatile male actor with a playing age of 30-40 to take the roles of three different characters in Caryl Churchill’s sci-fi thriller ‘A Number’. \nA one act play with a runtime of approximately one hour\, ‘A Number’ tells the story of Salter (60s) and three cloned versions of his son\, all of which have very distinct personalities. \nBernard 1 = The original son\, who Salter neglected in early childhood and then put into care. B1 has grown into an angry\, resentful and psychologically damaged adult. \nBernard 2 = The first clone who Salter adopted as his replacement son. B2 is naïve and vulnerable\, a bit of a man-child. He’s only just learned the truth of his origins. \nMichael Black = Another clone who has grown up never knowing about Salter. Michael is jovial and quirky\, a family man and teacher. Should be played comedically. \nAny actors who would be interested in this unique challenge\, please contact the director – kellycowley@hotmail.co.uk – as soon as you can. Davenham Players will be holding a second lot of auditions for this role on Tuesday 3rd January at 7pm (the role of Salter is also still open but there are actors in consideration). \nThe casting of this play will be followed by rehearsals on Tuesdays and Sundays from January until the performance week in mid-March.

SUMMARY:Play Reading Social
DESCRIPTION:Happy Families by John Godber \nI will be directing Happy Families at Davenham for performance from Tuesday 16 May to Saturday 20 May 2023. While the preceding Davenham production is itself in rehearsal\, we will rehearse on some Friday evenings. After that show closes on 19 March\, we will rehearse on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings\, with some weekend rehearsals in the build up to our opening night. Evening rehearsals will last from 7.30pm to 10.00pm. \nThere will be an informal reading of the play at the Theatre at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 January\, followed by auditions on Thursday 9 February. If you want to audition\, but cannot attend on the latter evening\, please contact me at home (‘phone 01270 626215; email park50@hotmail.com)\, so that we can arrange to meet sometime the previous week. Copies of the script are available from  Secreatary Paulette Anderson. On donpolander@tisca;li.co.uk \nHappy Families is a very funny play about family life in West Yorkshire over a period from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. The piece is autobiographical\, and the characters and action are seen through the filter of ‘John’. Godber specifically describes the stage set as ‘quite definitely theatrical’ – and the same can be said of the performances required. The play demands stylised playing with rather ‘arch’ (and often quite rapid) delivery\, with scenes often ending with the cast ‘freezing’ in stylised tableaux. \nRoles \nJohn                            The narrator\, aging from 9 to 25 \nDot                              John’s mum\, sharp and bitter\, aging from 40 to 54 \nVic                               John’s dad\, placid but eccentric\, aging from 40 to 54 \nLiz                               Dot’s mum\, sentimental\, aging from 60 to 74 \nJack                             Dot’s dad\, aggressive and bitter\, aging from 60 to 74 \nDoris                            Dot’s sister\, ‘‘John’s mucky auntie’’\, aging from 30 to 44 \nEdna                            Vic’s sister\, ‘‘John’s posh auntie’’\, aging from 40 to 54 \nRebecca                      Edna’s daughter\, ‘’John’s genius cousin’’\, aging from 11 to 25. (Ideally\, but not crucially\, the actor should be able to play the clarinet!) \nLynn Sutton                 Neighbour’s daughter\, aged 7. \nDot\, John and Vic are on stage almost all the time\, though not necessarily speaking. Jack and Liz are substantial roles\, Doris and Edna less so. Rebecca is on stage for about a quarter of the play\, and Lyn for two pages (if necessary\, this part can be played by the actor playing Rebecca). Authentic West Yorkshire speech would be ideal for all characters; failing that\, a generalised ‘northern accent’. \n  \nJerry Park \n

SUMMARY:AUDITION - 'Happy Families' by John Godber
DESCRIPTION:Audition Notice \nHappy Families by John Godber \nI will be directing Happy Families at Davenham for performance from Tuesday 16 May to Saturday 20 May 2023. \nThere will be an informal reading of the play at the Theatre at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 January\, followed by auditions on Thursday 9th and Thursday 16th February. \n  \nRoles \nJohn                            The narrator\, aging from 9 to 25 \nDot                              John’s mum\, sharp and bitter\, aging from 40 to 54 \nVic                               John’s dad\, placid but eccentric\, aging from 40 to 54 \nLiz                               Dot’s mum\, sentimental\, aging from 60 to 74 \nJack                             Dot’s dad\, aggressive and bitter\, aging from 60 to 74 \nDoris                            Dot’s sister\, ‘‘John’s mucky auntie’’\, aging from 30 to 44 \nEdna                            Vic’s sister\, ‘‘John’s posh auntie’’\, aging from 40 to 54 \nRebecca                      Edna’s daughter\, ‘’John’s genius cousin’’\, aging from 11 to 25. (Ideally\, but not crucially\, the actor should be able to play the clarinet!) \nLynn Sutton                 Neighbour’s daughter\, aged 7. \n  \nDot\, John and Vic are on stage almost all the time\, though not necessarily speaking. \nJerry Park \n

SUMMARY:AUDITION - 'Allo 'Allo by Jeremy Lloyd & David Croft
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAUDITION NOTICE – ALLO ALLO \nAuditions will be held on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 July 2023  – 7.30pm at the theatre. \nMembers and non members welcome! \nWritten by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft \nDirected by April Johnson (april@btinternet.com 07711 709946) \nRun dates: 21- 25 November 2023 \nRehearsals: To be agreed at first read through. Starting with read throughs week commencing 21 August 2023 \nFor this production we need larger than life characters and true comic timing. We want the audience to be enthralled and entertained! So\, if you are a strong performer and would love to be part of this production\, come along and audition! We will have so much fun doing this show\, all we ask is that you learn lines early so we can focus on the character interaction\, the comedy and physical theatre element. \nCHARACTERS \nRENÉ ARTOIS Male\, middle-aged French Café Owner\, playing age 40-60. This is the central role\, René is on stage most of the time and drives the show’s narrative. René is the only character to frequently break the 4th wall to speak directly to the audience. René is a self-confessed coward who tries to remain impartial whilst always protecting his own best interests. He is a harangued but charismatic everyman and despite a rather ordinary appearance seems to have an irresistible allure\, particularly to his two young waitresses and also to Gruber\, a friendly German Officer who likes to frequent the café. This is a physical role which will involve lots of sexual innuendo and a number of amorous scenes! \nCOLONEL KURT VON STROHM Male\, playing age 40-60\, German. The Colonel is the corrupt town commandant who likes to line his own pockets with stolen Nazi treasures. He is a frequent visitor to the café where he seeks favours from the waitresses. He also forces René to conceal stolen artefacts for him and in return keeps secret the knowledge that René is hiding the British airmen in his basement. He is greedy\, vain and self-serving yet remains quite likeable despite all of this. Ideally\, the Colonel should be played by someone who is stocky. The Colonel wears a “wiglet” for a large part of the play. Sings/speaks a line in one of Edith’s cabaret songs. \nCAPTAIN ALBERTO BERTORELLI Male\, playing age 20-50\, Italian. Bertorelli is a flamboyant\, bombastic Italian captain attached to the German forces. He believes himself to be very charming and has a keen eye for the ladies\, but he loves nobody more than he loves himself. Bertorelli is over-the top in both his speech and physicality. Bertorelli is in league with Colonel Von Strohm and also plans to profit from undeclared stolen Nazi goods. He sings /speaks a line in one of Edith’s cabaret songs and has to impersonate Hitler in Act 2. 4 \nHERR OTTO FLICK Male\, playing age 20-50\, German\, preferably blonde but not essential. Herr Flick is an agent of the Gestapo. He walks with a limp and uses a stick as a walking aid/weapon! He is reportedly Himmler’s godson and aspires to be like his Nazi hero. Flick is entirely emotionless and cold\, yet still manages to demonstrate a repressed /mildly sadistic passion for his assistant Helga. Flick is nearly always seen in long leather coat\, pin stripe suit\, leather gloves and glasses. In this show he plays the violin\, dances a tango (stiffly) and also disguises himself as a sexy cinema usherette. Please do let us know when auditioning if you are adept at any of these skills! \nLIEUTENANT HUBERT GRUBER Male\, German\, playing age 20-60. Gruber is a kindly German officer\, who doesn’t much enjoy his official duties (with the possible exception of time spent in his “little tank”). Gruber does enjoy his visits to the café though\, and lives in hope of expanding his relationship with René\, with whom he feels he has a special bond! Gruber frequently walks in on René in a variety of compromising or embarrassing positions. The subtext of course is that Gruber is hopelessly in love with René\, which should be played with subtlety and not overtly camp. \nGENERAL LUDVIG VON SCHMELLING Male\, German\, playing age 40-60. General Von Schmelling does not appear in the TV show but is a similar character to General Von Klinkerhoffen. He is a senior officer who takes his military duties very seriously indeed. He is a strict\, authoritative figure who takes a very dim view of the Resistance\, and corruption within his own ranks. Everyone is terrified of him\, with the exception of Herr Flick. Schmelling is supposed to have a wooden leg and he could also wear an eye patch. \nOFFICER CRABTREE Male\, British\, disguised as a French “poloceman”\, playing age between 20-50. A gem of a part\, this character has some of the most popular catchphrases from the series\, e.g. “Good moaning! I was just pissing by…” etc. Crabtree is a British undercover agent posing as a very sombre French policeman. His knowledge of French is very weak\, and he often uses the wrong vowel sounds leading to comical misunderstandings! The actor taking this role would ideally be tall and slender. This is a physical role and will involve some compromising positions! \nROGER LECLERC Male\, French\, playing age 60+ (can be aged up for the part). An elderly forger and escaped convict he now works for the French Resistance. Leclerc appears in a variety of different disguises (all unconvincing)! In the TV series\, Leclerc was also the pianist who accompanies Edith in the café\, but it’s not imperative Leclerc is a piano player as we can fake it! \nRAF AIRMEN: FLIGHT LIEUTENANTS FAIRFAX AND CARSTAIRS 2 x Male Roles\, British. Fairfax and Carstairs are the British Airmen in hiding in René’s café\, awaiting repatriation with the help of The French Resistance. Should be played as the quintessential “chocs away” happy-go-lucky Brits. Whilst these roles are very memorable from the series\, there are relatively few lines for these parts in the stage show. The airmen pop out of various hidden locations on the set. We may build these roles further to include between-scene sketches as well (TBC). These parts can be doubled with a backstage role and would require relatively little rehearsal. \nEDITH ARTOIS Female\, French\, playing age 40-60. Demanding but faithful wife of René Artois. Despite being a terrible singer\, Edith believes that she is a musical star and regularly performs a cabaret at the café which is usually badly received by the patrons. Edith has 2 musical numbers in the show\, which need to be comically off-key! Edith is very gullible\, passionate and long-suffering. For the audition\, as well as script work we will ask you to perform a short burst of a song of your choice\, preferably with some movement as well. The song can be anything\, but think about the kind of song Edith might sing! Your challenge is to try to make me laugh – singing out of tune won’t be an issue but a bonus! \nYVETTE CARTE-BLANCHE French waitress\, tall and attractive\, ideally brunette. Playing age 18-40. Yvette is a good looking waitress who is having a passionate affair with René. She hopes to elope with him one day. As a side-line Yvette & Mimi “entertain” soldiers in one of the upstairs rooms of the café. Yvette also takes part in the grand cabaret\, so she may need to be able to sing and dance. As part of the audition for this role\, we may ask you to perform a short burst of a song of your choice\, in a comedic and saucy (ha!) style with some movement as well. \nMIMI LABONQ French waitress\, short\, cute. Playing age 18-40. Mimi Labonq is a feisty waitress and secret assassin working for the French Resistance. Mimi is also having a passionate affair with René unbeknownst to Edith or Yvette. She is tempestuous and fiery and often has to be held back from attacking German visitors in the café. As a sideline Yvette & Mimi “entertain” soldiers in one of the upstairs rooms of the café. Mimi also takes part in the grand cabaret so she may need to be able to sing and dance. As part of the audition for this role\, we may ask you to perform a short burst of a song of your choice\, in a comedic feisty style – please think about adding with some movement as well. \nMICHELLE DUBOIS French\, local leader of the Resistance Movement\, playing age 20-40. Catchphrase: “Listen very carefully\, I will say this only once”. Michelle has persuaded a reluctant René to help them hide 2 British Airmen in the cellar. She frequently appears in disguise and is highly passionate about her cause. Speaks with a French accent except when talking to the British Airmen when she adopts an exaggerated upper class English accent. \nPRIVATE HELGA GEERHART German\, playing age 20-40\, preferably blonde. Attractive secretary to General Von Strohm. Helga is in a strange sadomasochistic relationship with Herr Flick. Helga has to strip down to her sexy lingerie in one scene (TBC!!!). She also will be performing a very uptight tango in another scene. Helga is clipped and severe but a sexy seductress lurks underneath her harsh exterior. \nPLUS 4 x Extra actors (Male or female) to appear in various café scenes and also double as stage crew.
