M G Boulter has aimed high with this one and taken time to create a full-length work that demands\, as well as rewards\, deep immersion” – KLOF Mag \n“This is an important album. It shows that there are real songwriters still out there\, and real musicians creating images in sung words. \nI’m not sure that this society deserves MG Boulter\, but I’m so glad he still exists to shake a fist at the ‘content’ pedlars.” – MusicNews 5***** \n“Days of Shaking will take the listener on a journey of sheer delight” – Fatea \nClifftown \n“He’s a major talent in my opinion. Setting lyrics that deal with the contrasts and contradictions of life to romantic melodies as hopeful as they are melancholy\, McSweeney’s finely crafted songs have been championed by his peers as well as across national radio and mainstream and specialist press. Since the release of his debut album\, Cargo\, McSweeney has made increasingly big waves on the English folk scene picking up main stage festival appearances. Folk audiences may recognise Neil from his time touring alongside Bellowhead \nIn 2016 Neil became co-founder of Hudson Records and alongside his ‘day job’ running a masters course for the music department at the University of Sheffield\, Neil still finds the time to collaborate and create with the likes of Jon Boden\, Fay Hield\, Vera Van Heeringen\, Lucy Farrell\, M G Boulter and many more great songwriters and musicians. \nMcSweeney’s fourth album\, ‘A Coat Worth Wearing\,’ was the second release for Hudson Records back in 2017. Produced by Andy Bell it built on the success of its predecessor ‘Cargo’. Its nine songs were conceived as a piece and subsequently recorded together\, largely in full-band live-takes\, over seven days in the beautiful Welsh countryside. \n“Deeply felt\, brooding songs rich in imagery. He has the tools to make a huge impact.” **** The Guardian \n“McSweeney is the genuine article. Highly recommended.” **** Daily Express \n“Steelier than your average troubadour.’ Q Magazine \n“Songs so subtle and well-crafted that you can’t help but be drawn in…they deserve much wider acclaim.”DrownedInSound.com \nAll monies raised via ticket sales go to the bands and the theatre. \nDoors 19.30 Start 20.00 Curfew 22.15 \nOnline tkts available \n£15.00 after 1st October 2025 \nhttps://www.wegottickets.com/event/656652 \n£15.00 [mark me as a friend] \nPaypal.com/paypal.me/andrewwhalley1 \nLocal cash purchases \nCall 07510 853 589 to arrange \n£20 On The Door

SUMMARY:Music Peter Bruntnell
DESCRIPTION:In an uncertain number of years time\, it will be acceptably cool to say that you first got into non-Grammy-winning artist Peter Bruntnell through his classic 2024 album Houdini And The Sucker Punch\, before then going back and discovering his back catalogue of yet more “classics”. And you were there! You saw him live. You were one of those “10” people who saw him play in that modestly-sized room\, almost 30 years into his career. \nSo here we are again. Three years on\, another album into Peter’s 13 or 14 album catalogue and shouldering the burden of even more sublime reviews. Every possible positive adjective has been called into play\, although it must be noted that the word “sublime” can never be used enough. Not even 2021’s primarily solo\, slightly synthy lockdown album succeeded in putting an end to his non-success\, despite Mojo echoing the plea that\, “Somehow\, some way\, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”. The Scottish Daily Express with its 5 star review\, slightly frustrated\, said\, or perhaps yelled\, “I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”. The Irish Times thoughtfully combined two quotes into one\, saving us the trouble of going back and getting crushed under the sheer weight of Peter’s archive of press quotes: “With Journey To The Sun\, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done it again.” And he continues to do so. But not without a brief foray into dance music\, in collaboration with mega pop-hit songwriter Rob Davies. A foray that succeeded in sneaking by\, almost completely unnoticed\, therefore providing us with no further fresh quotes. If veering off entirely into the dark world of autotune would have increased his chances of hitting the big time\, we shall never know. But fortunately Peter’s taking his chances. \nNew album Houdini And The Sucker Punch sees Peter re-employing his long-term band members Mick Clews (drums)\, Dave Little (electric guitar) and Peter Noone (bass)\, along with a number of his favourite musicians. Cameos include pedal steel virtuoso Eric Heywood adding magic to Houdini\, The Flying Monk and Stamps Of The World\, Son Volt / Uncle Tupelo’s Jay Farrar playing piano on Sharks\, Peter’s old partner in crime (we suspect quite literally)\, James Walbourne of The Pretenders tearing up Yellow Gold\, cellist Laura Anstee on Sharks and Jimmy Mac\, Son Volt’s Mark Spencer’s Hammond organ and piano on Let There Be A Scar and mastering man Peter Linnane touching up the album with some added Hammond organ and synth. \nFollowing Davenham\, Peter will be touring the UK as opener for top US Americana band The Delines at several Theatres around the UK\, the first leg for The Delines of a EU wide tour. \nhttps://peterbruntnell.co.uk/ \nLine up [subject to change] \nPeter Bruntnell [Vocal Guitar}\nMick Clews [Drums]\nDave Little [Guitar]\nPeter Noone [Bass] \n“Somehow\, some way\, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”\n★★★★\nMOJO \n“I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”\n★★★★★\nSCOTTISH DAILY EXPRESS \n“As with all of his work to date\, Bruntnell’s strike rate is inordinately high\, and how he has never gone beyond cult status continues to puzzle.”\nTHE IRISH TIMES \n“taking a dive into psychedelia\, the writing remaining consistently outstanding and beguiling”\nTHE GUARDIAN \n“Too talented to stay the property of an avid cult\, his sparky humour and uniquely British perspective are evident in the lushly-attended tunes here”\nTHE DAILY MIRROR \nDoors 07.30pm Start 08.00pm Curfew 10.15pm \n£15 via me now at paypal.me/andrewwhalley1 \n£16.50 from 01/12/2024 https://www.wegottickets.com/event/637260

SUMMARY:Acoustic@Davenham
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD IN AID OF BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH \nWith Graham Bell\, Racing Demon\, Arthur Marshall\, Bitter and Twisted \n‘Acoustic @Davenham is an evening showcasing some of the best acoustic/roots music from the Cheshire folk scene in the uniquely intimate surroundings of Davenham Theatre. \nGRAHAM BELL\nGraham Bell is a singer/songwriter originally from the North East of England. He takes the rich cultural heritage of the region to weave songs with humour and pathos with a gritty undercurrent which reflects the hardships endured by his forebears. \n  \nRACING DEMON\nAfter a lengthy period of mutual admiration at Sale folk club\, Simon Eales and James Cawley eventually pooled their talents and became Racing Demon. With many shared enthusiasms\, they gradually expanding their repertoire of well-crafted interpretations of material by a wide spectrum of artists –  in the process becoming staples of the South Manchester/Cheshire folk club scene –  their live stripped-down combination of voice and guitar earning them considerable acclaim. But always keen to develop\,and experiment they expanded this basic format to record the album ‘Take The Money And Run \n\, aided and abetted by North West folk legend Arthur Marshall.’ \n  \nARTHUR MARSHALL\nArthur is a folk musician of long standing (though more often sitting\, these days)\, known for playing an  entertaining mixture of serious and humorous songs\, mostly written by himself. Sometimes these have choruses and participation is always welcome\, but not compulsory! \nHe has played for many years both on his own and in bands\, performing music ranging in styles from Cajun and zydeco to Irish music\, while also running\, playing in\, and calling the dances for several ceilidh and barn dance bands. \nHe plays mostly guitar\, melodeon and fiddle; however\, several other more unlikely instruments for a dyed-in-the-wool folkie\, such as saxophones\, trombones and euphoniums\, occasionally make an appearance – you can never be quite sure… \nBITTER & TWISTED\nBitter and Twisted are a folk combo comprised of long-time songster Lizzie Rosenfield and her accompanist Dave Giles. Their eclectic musical influences range from contemporary folk and blues to the more traditional\, all entwined by decorous vocal harmonies and dextrous guitar accompaniment. \nLiz has trodden the boards for many years as a promoter within the folk world and as a shy artist and is founder of the Cheshire Folk Club. Her stature among fellow artists is well known\, indeed is unmissable! Lover of a ‘girlie song’\, Liz has gratified many and disappointed few. David’s voice washes like an ocean over Liz’s broad vocal beach\, lapping close to her but never going further than an invitation for a paddle. His tones wind around her ankles\, wetting her toes as she retreats\, succumbing to his melody as a lover at the nape of her neck\, and they make sweet music as they splash among the musical waves. \n  \nTickets £12.50 from our Ticket Shop at Ticket Source \nThere will be a raffle in aid of Brain Cancer Research \nDoors open 18:45 \nMusic at 19:30

SUMMARY:Music - Vinny Peculiar Band with guest Common Hall
DESCRIPTION:Images (C) Gel Gee\n\nVINNY PECULIAR BAND\nVinny Peculiar [aka Alan Wilkes] grew up in Worcestershire and trained as a nurse before signing to Manchester cult label Ugly Man records [former home to Elbow]. He’s since released many albums of literate autobiographical pop music over a twenty+ year career touring band\, solo and duo shows in the UK\, Ireland\, Europe and the US. Variously described as \n\n“an under sung national treasure” (UNCUT)\n“a warm- hearted Morrissey” (Q Magazine) and\n“the missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough” (Irish Times)\n\nPast work associations include Bill Drummond (KLF) and his various bands have included ex members of The Smiths\, OASIS\, Aztec Camera & The Fall. He’s written and recorded as Parlour Flames\, the band he formed in 2013 with ex OASIS rhythm guitarist Bonehead. \nThe Davenham show will reflect the set list played at a recent near sell out show at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room – covering a number of albums from his back catalogue – with emphasis on his most  recent release. \nLINE-UP \nVinny Peculiar [Alan Wilkes] Acoustic / Electric Guitar / Lead Vocal\nRob Steadman Keyboards / Vocal\nAdam Webb Electric Guitar / Vocal\nJim Gee Bass Guitar / Vocal\nPaul Tsanos Drums \n“A hugely talented musician who is right up there with Elvis Costello\, Ray Davies and Jarvis Cocker\, Peculiar should be placed on a pedestal” (Sean Hanan\, Hi Fi + Magazine). \n“A well-measured introduction to an under sung national treasure” (UNCUT MAGAZINE). \n“The missing link between Jarvis Cocker and poet Roger McGough and some of the wittiest lyrics this side of Wreckless Eric” (IRISH TIMES). \nCOMMON HALL\nOpening the night will be Common Hall (aka Robert Williams) – originally from Clitheroe\, Lancashire – Robert’s an award-winning\, acclaimed author beyond the day job\, and in this case a gifted singer-songwriter nudged out of self-imposed performing retirement. \nHere’s part of a review of a recent gig as written by Malcolm Wyatt taken from his website https://writewyattuk.com/ \nOpening number ‘We Were There’ gave off a Robert Forster vibe\, but I soon changed my mind and felt within a few songs he was closer to his namesake’s Go-Betweens accomplice\, Grant McLennan. Either way\, there was an understated yet sharp story song element\, highlights including ‘My Town on TV’ and ‘As Broken as you Think’\, first delivered with past act The Library Trust\, while ‘The Meeting’ and ‘Golden Island’ – the latter more barbed wire folk – were maybe more where he’s at now\, seemingly fragile yet increasingly acerbic\, his songs stripped to the bare bones. Prime examples were the bitter yet measured ‘Hope This Hurts’ and ‘They Don’t Sing for Me’. \nDoors: 7:30pm\, Music at: 8:00pm Close: 10.15pm [ish] \nTickets \n£15 via Andrew Whalley now at paypal.me/andrewwhalley1 or txt 07510853589 to arrange payment \n£16.50 online from 01/08/2024 https://www.wegottickets.com/event/615043
