SUMMARY:Jazz The Breath
DESCRIPTION:The Breath is Manchester-based guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly. They met on the city’s gig circuit in the late noughties. An unlikely pairing though it was\, he an acclaimed guitar whiz\, ex long-time member of The Cinematic Orchestra and a softly spoken Manchester urbanite\, she a folk singer with a larger-than-life personality and a powerful voice to match. Their connection was immediate; they formed The Breath in 2016\, a singer-songwriter duo to present their contemporary take on alt-folk. \nFor them\, it’s all about the song. Connolly is a storyteller and their exquisitely crafted\, honest\, personal\, heartfelt songs are as likely to touch on childhood summers and first love as cultural dislocation\, post- colonial injustices and grief. But it’s Ríoghnach’s impassioned delivery and extraordinary stop-you-in- your-tracks voice\, coupled with Stuart’s understated brilliance that is so engaging. \nThe Breath have released three albums on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. Their breakthrough album\, ‘Carry Your Kin’ (2016) delved deeply into the spaces between rock\, ambient and Irish folk\, where layered vocals\, mesmerising guitar riffs and expansive folk arrangements created a big sound. ‘Let the Cards Fall’ followed in 2018\, and\, like the first\, was recorded with a full band granting a multi-textured kaleidoscope of sound with a cinematic sensibility. References to Celtic history and cultural loss are woven into a bewitching collection of songs that span beguiling ballads and punch-the-air anthems. In support of the release\, Stuart and Ríoghnach performed a series of shows – just the two of them. Stripped bare\, they found a new depth and beauty in their songs allowing their extraordinary connection to shine through. The duo returned to the studio in 2019 to record ‘Only Stories (Let the Cards Fall Revisited)’ reimagining previous work (alongside two new songs) taking it back to its acoustic roots. This new direction would see Ríoghnach Connolly receive an RTÉ Folk Award nomination for Best Folk Singer and win Folk Singer Of The Year at the 2019 BBC R2 Folk Awards for which the duo were also nominated as Best Duo/Group. \nDuring the pandemic of 2020/2021\, The Breath returned to the studio to record a set of songs in remembrance of American lost folk icon\, Karen Dalton. In the spring of 2021\, they released a two-track single\, ‘Something On Your Mind’ and original song\, ‘Remembering Mountains’. They release their third studio album on Real World Records in 2023. \nThe Breath in Autumn 2023 build to their new album\, ‘Land Of My Other’. Ten original tracks of raw\, gorgeous\, acoustic-minded music.Songs that tell stories in ways that soothe\, stir\, exalt\, and touch emotional chords that will bring tears of lamenting joy\, to your eyes. \nQUOTES \n“raw\, soulful\, often mesmeric\, richly textured and lushly constructed…versatile persuasive vocals” Mojo \n“folk roots but different horizons… the jaw-droppingly stunning\, woozy voice of Ríoghnach Connolly” The Guardian \n=========================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time. \n\n\n\nIf possible\, make your requests via email\, but don’t forget to give us a little bit of notice if you know that you are going to be unable to attend.  We appreciate that there will always be unavoidable\, unforeseen circumstances\, but clearly we want to make places available and fill all possible seats\, particularly for gigs in high demand. \n\n\n\nWe are not a profit making organisation\, but we do want to keep breaking even in order to keep music live. \n\n\n\nBooking Enquiries \nCall Keith on 07990 703 787 \nemail jazz@davenham.co \n\n\n\nPlease do not assume that your places are confirmed unless you have had a response from J@D and\, if you have not\, then contact us again \n\n\n\nDoors & Bar 7.30pm   Gigs start @ 8pm   Tickets £13 unless stated \n\n\n\nIf you are suffering from Covid symptoms please do not attend and in any case advise us if you are unable to attend for any reason. \nFrom JAZZ@DAVENHAM TEAM\nGREAT GIGS\nFABULOUS BANDS\nClick to see the full Jazz Programme

SUMMARY:Jazz Groove Crusade
DESCRIPTION:Groove Crusade\nSet up in 2019\, just before the worldwide pandemic lockdown\, Groove Crusade exists solely to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Crusaders\, for nigh on 50 years the group of US musicians who developed\, indeed pioneered\, the links between jazz\, blues\, soul and funk. \nThe players in Groove Crusade have\, collectively\, over 250 years’ experience in the music business\, including studio and live work with artists as ridiculously diverse as Max Bygraves and Tony Christie at one end of the spectrum to Sting and Jack Bruce at the other\, via a host of great jazz names. And venues? Sydney Opera House\, Carnegie Hall\, Hollywood Bowl\, Glastonbury; one or other band member has worked stages such as these at some point. \nWhat brought Groove Crusade together is a common love of the music of the Crusaders\, and an acknowledgement of how that has influenced their own individual professional careers\, playing \, writing and arranging. If ever a band was a labour of love\, this is it. \nDrawing on the Crusaders’ entire recording career\, from early days as a Texas hard-bop band to international renown as live and session musicians\, Groove Crusade strives to recreate as best it can the feel – above all the groove – for which the Crusaders were justly renowned. \nWe hope you can feel it. \n=========================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time.

SUMMARY:Jazz Will Barnes Quartet
DESCRIPTION:WILL BARNES QUARTET\nTHURSDAY 29TH JANUARY 2026\n\nFollowing the critical acclaim of their debut album Source of the Severn\, the Will Barnes Quartet returns with Outside the Light—a bold and expressive new chapter in their artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from local folklore and Celtic mythology\, the album explores themes of light\, seasons and changing landscapes. This second album deepens the group’s exploration of the interplay between jazz improvisation and the evocative landscapes of Mid Wales and the Welsh Marches.  \n\nLed by guitarist and composer Will Barnes\, the quartet features pianist Jack Gonsalez\, bassist Aidan Thorne\, and drummer James Batten—an ensemble recognised for its tight chemistry and compelling live performances. SUMMARY:Jazz Ben Holder Trio
DESCRIPTION:BEN HOLDER TRIO\nTHURSDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2026\n\nBen Holder [36] is the most acclaimed and exciting jazz violinist in the UK. His classical studies began at the age of six and were complemented by training at the Birmingham Conservatoire. An introduction to jazz came in his early teens – classic masters such as Benny Goodman\, Oscar Peterson and Stephane Grappelli – and lead Ben to truly find his place as a musician. \nBen possesses an innate sense of swing rhythm (something which often eludes classical players)\, breathtaking technical ability and true showmanship on stage. He offers flawless musicianship\, heaps of energy and personality and a visible passion for his craft. \nBen’s various awards bear testimony to these abilities. Often playing across the UK\, Europe and further afield\, he is a first-call jazz violinist for many of the country’s top venues\, line-ups and studios. \nThe Ben Holder Trio is a stellar line-up of incredible musicians\, blending an energetic mix of traditional jazz and Gypsy Swing with Ben’s own infectious originals\, which hark back to the fun and swing of the 1920s and 1930s.  \nThe group is one of the most exciting bands to emerge in recent years. Led by the fiery enthusiasm of Ben on extraordinary violin\, the trio is strengthened by the phenomenal musicians on guitar and double bass. The Ben Holder Trio masterfully mix old jazz favourites and upbeat swingers with some more recent material and leave audiences up and down the country shouting for more. \nExpect foot-tapping standards and festive frolics as you’ve never experienced before! \n=========================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time. \n\n\n\nBooking Enquiries Call Keith on 07990 703 787\nor email jazz@davenham.co\n\n\n\nPlease do not assume that your places are confirmed unless you have had a response from J@D and\, if you have not\, then contact us again \n\n\n\nDoors & Bar 7.30pm Gigs start @ 8pm\n   Tickets £15\n\n\n\nFrom JAZZ@DAVENHAM TEAM\nGREAT GIGS\nFABULOUS BANDS\nClick to see the full Jazz Programme

SUMMARY:Jazz Florian Arbenz Convergence Project
DESCRIPTION:FLORIAN ARBENZ CONVERGENCE PROJECT\nTHURSDAY 29TH APRIL 2027\n\nInspired in part by the great drummer/bandleaders like Art Blakey\, Max Roach and Peter Erskine\, Florian set up the Convergence project to perform the hard-swinging joy-filled jazz that helped us fall in love with this genre. \nFor 2025 & 2026\, they will present a brand-new CD – Moon – featuring the incredible Cuban Vistel brothers\, Maikel & Jorge – and they will be touring extensively from their combined bases in Switzerland and Spain. \nFlorian Arbenz sees jazz not as a fixed style but as a framework to adapt and reshape. On Moon\, that means using the drums to set space and colour for strong musical voices to connect. The result is direct\, modern jazz that respects its roots while speaking today’s language.  \nThis will be a Truly International Performance with world class Jazz musicians in the line up. \nThe Line Up \nJorge Vistel: trumpet \nMaikel Vistel: sax \nIvo Neame: piano \nRafael Jerjen: bass \nFlorian Arbenz:drums \n=========================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time.
