M G Boulter has aimed high with this one and taken time to create a full-length work that demands\, as well as rewards\, deep immersion” – KLOF Mag \n“This is an important album. It shows that there are real songwriters still out there\, and real musicians creating images in sung words. \nI’m not sure that this society deserves MG Boulter\, but I’m so glad he still exists to shake a fist at the ‘content’ pedlars.” – MusicNews 5***** \n“Days of Shaking will take the listener on a journey of sheer delight” – Fatea \nClifftown \n“He’s a major talent in my opinion. It’s an outstanding album – it’s the best new record I’ve heard all year. Well done M G\, you can come play in my kitchen any time” – Andy Kershaw.Ex OGWT Radio1 \nhttp://www.mgboulter.co.uk/ \nYou can order M G Boulter’s latest album\, Days of Shaking (CD/LP/DL) HERE:\nNeil McSweeney\nTaken from the Hudson Records website :\nFolk singer-songwriter Neil McSweeney emerged from the flowering of Sheffield music that gave the world the likes of Slow Club and Richard Hawley and has since established himself as ‘a songwriter of rare ability’ (R2). Setting lyrics that deal with the contrasts and contradictions of life to romantic melodies as hopeful as they are melancholy\, McSweeney’s finely crafted songs have been championed by his peers as well as across national radio and mainstream and specialist press. Since the release of his debut album\, Cargo\, McSweeney has made increasingly big waves on the English folk scene picking up main stage festival appearances. Folk audiences may recognise Neil from his time touring alongside Bellowhead \nIn 2016 Neil became co-founder of Hudson Records and alongside his ‘day job’ running a masters course for the music department at the University of Sheffield\, Neil still finds the time to collaborate and create with the likes of Jon Boden\, Fay Hield\, Vera Van Heeringen\, Lucy Farrell\, M G Boulter and many more great songwriters and musicians. \nMcSweeney’s fourth album\, ‘A Coat Worth Wearing\,’ was the second release for Hudson Records back in 2017. Produced by Andy Bell it built on the success of its predecessor ‘Cargo’. SUMMARY:Jazz Groove Crusade
DESCRIPTION:Groove Crusade\nSet up in 2019\, just before the worldwide pandemic lockdown\, Groove Crusade exists solely to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Crusaders\, for nigh on 50 years the group of US musicians who developed\, indeed pioneered\, the links between jazz\, blues\, soul and funk. \nThe players in Groove Crusade have\, collectively\, over 250 years’ experience in the music business\, including studio and live work with artists as ridiculously diverse as Max Bygraves and Tony Christie at one end of the spectrum to Sting and Jack Bruce at the other\, via a host of great jazz names. SUMMARY:Jazz The Breath
DESCRIPTION:The Breath is Manchester-based guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly. They met on the city’s gig circuit in the late noughties. An unlikely pairing though it was\, he an acclaimed guitar whiz\, ex long-time member of The Cinematic Orchestra and a softly spoken Manchester urbanite\, she a folk singer with a larger-than-life personality and a powerful voice to match. Their connection was immediate; they formed The Breath in 2016\, a singer-songwriter duo to present their contemporary take on alt-folk. \nFor them\, it’s all about the song. Connolly is a storyteller and their exquisitely crafted\, honest\, personal\, heartfelt songs are as likely to touch on childhood summers and first love as cultural dislocation\, post- colonial injustices and grief. But it’s Ríoghnach’s impassioned delivery and extraordinary stop-you-in- your-tracks voice\, coupled with Stuart’s understated brilliance that is so engaging. \nThe Breath have released three albums on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. Their breakthrough album\, ‘Carry Your Kin’ (2016) delved deeply into the spaces between rock\, ambient and Irish folk\, where layered vocals\, mesmerising guitar riffs and expansive folk arrangements created a big sound. ‘Let the Cards Fall’ followed in 2018\, and\, like the first\, was recorded with a full band granting a multi-textured kaleidoscope of sound with a cinematic sensibility. References to Celtic history and cultural loss are woven into a bewitching collection of songs that span beguiling ballads and punch-the-air anthems. In support of the release\, Stuart and Ríoghnach performed a series of shows – just the two of them. Stripped bare\, they found a new depth and beauty in their songs allowing their extraordinary connection to shine through. The duo returned to the studio in 2019 to record ‘Only Stories (Let the Cards Fall Revisited)’ reimagining previous work (alongside two new songs) taking it back to its acoustic roots. This new direction would see Ríoghnach Connolly receive an RTÉ Folk Award nomination for Best Folk Singer and win Folk Singer Of The Year at the 2019 BBC R2 Folk Awards for which the duo were also nominated as Best Duo/Group. \nDuring the pandemic of 2020/2021\, The Breath returned to the studio to record a set of songs in remembrance of American lost folk icon\, Karen Dalton. In the spring of 2021\, they released a two-track single\, ‘Something On Your Mind’ and original song\, ‘Remembering Mountains’. They release their third studio album on Real World Records in 2023. \nThe Breath in Autumn 2023 build to their new album\, ‘Land Of My Other’. Ten original tracks of raw\, gorgeous\, acoustic-minded music.Songs that tell stories in ways that soothe\, stir\, exalt\, and touch emotional chords that will bring tears of lamenting joy\, to your eyes. \nQUOTES \n“raw\, soulful\, often mesmeric\, richly textured and lushly constructed…versatile persuasive vocals” Mojo \n“folk roots but different horizons… the jaw-droppingly stunning\, woozy voice of Ríoghnach Connolly” The Guardian \n=========================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time. \n\n\n\nIf possible\, make your requests via email\, but don’t forget to give us a little bit of notice if you know that you are going to be unable to attend.  We appreciate that there will always be unavoidable\, unforeseen circumstances\, but clearly we want to make places available and fill all possible seats\, particularly for gigs in high demand. \n\n\n\nWe are not a profit making organisation\, but we do want to keep breaking even in order to keep music live. \n\n\n\nBooking Enquiries \nCall Keith on 07990 703 787 \nemail jazz@davenham.co \n\n\n\nPlease do not assume that your places are confirmed unless you have had a response from J@D and\, if you have not\, then contact us again \n\n\n\nDoors & Bar 7.30pm   Gigs start @ 8pm   Tickets £13 unless stated \n\n\n\nIf you are suffering from Covid symptoms please do not attend and in any case advise us if you are unable to attend for any reason. \nFrom JAZZ@DAVENHAM TEAM\nGREAT GIGS\nFABULOUS BANDS\nClick to see the full Jazz Programme

SUMMARY:Music Peter Bruntnell
DESCRIPTION:In an uncertain number of years time\, it will be acceptably cool to say that you first got into non-Grammy-winning artist Peter Bruntnell through his classic 2024 album Houdini And The Sucker Punch\, before then going back and discovering his back catalogue of yet more “classics”. And you were there! You saw him live. You were one of those “10” people who saw him play in that modestly-sized room\, almost 30 years into his career. \nSo here we are again. Three years on\, another album into Peter’s 13 or 14 album catalogue and shouldering the burden of even more sublime reviews. Every possible positive adjective has been called into play\, although it must be noted that the word “sublime” can never be used enough. Not even 2021’s primarily solo\, slightly synthy lockdown album succeeded in putting an end to his non-success\, despite Mojo echoing the plea that\, “Somehow\, some way\, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”. The Scottish Daily Express with its 5 star review\, slightly frustrated\, said\, or perhaps yelled\, “I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”. The Irish Times thoughtfully combined two quotes into one\, saving us the trouble of going back and getting crushed under the sheer weight of Peter’s archive of press quotes: “With Journey To The Sun\, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done it again.” And he continues to do so. But not without a brief foray into dance music\, in collaboration with mega pop-hit songwriter Rob Davies. A foray that succeeded in sneaking by\, almost completely unnoticed\, therefore providing us with no further fresh quotes. If veering off entirely into the dark world of autotune would have increased his chances of hitting the big time\, we shall never know. But fortunately Peter’s taking his chances. \nNew album Houdini And The Sucker Punch sees Peter re-employing his long-term band members Mick Clews (drums)\, Dave Little (electric guitar) and Peter Noone (bass)\, along with a number of his favourite musicians. Cameos include pedal steel virtuoso Eric Heywood adding magic to Houdini\, The Flying Monk and Stamps Of The World\, Son Volt / Uncle Tupelo’s Jay Farrar playing piano on Sharks\, Peter’s old partner in crime (we suspect quite literally)\, James Walbourne of The Pretenders tearing up Yellow Gold\, cellist Laura Anstee on Sharks and Jimmy Mac\, Son Volt’s Mark Spencer’s Hammond organ and piano on Let There Be A Scar and mastering man Peter Linnane touching up the album with some added Hammond organ and synth. \nFollowing Davenham\, Peter will be touring the UK as opener for top US Americana band The Delines at several Theatres around the UK\, the first leg for The Delines of a EU wide tour. \nhttps://peterbruntnell.co.uk/ \nLine up [subject to change] \nPeter Bruntnell [Vocal Guitar}\nMick Clews [Drums]\nDave Little [Guitar]\nPeter Noone [Bass] \n“Somehow\, some way\, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”\n★★★★\nMOJO \n“I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”\n★★★★★\nSCOTTISH DAILY EXPRESS \n“As with all of his work to date\, Bruntnell’s strike rate is inordinately high\, and how he has never gone beyond cult status continues to puzzle.”\nTHE IRISH TIMES \n“taking a dive into psychedelia\, the writing remaining consistently outstanding and beguiling”\nTHE GUARDIAN \n“Too talented to stay the property of an avid cult\, his sparky humour and uniquely British perspective are evident in the lushly-attended tunes here”\nTHE DAILY MIRROR \nDoors 07.30pm Start 08.00pm Curfew 10.15pm \n£15 via me now at paypal.me/andrewwhalley1 \n£16.50 from 01/12/2024 https://www.wegottickets.com/event/637260

SUMMARY:Jazz Magic Beans
DESCRIPTION:With a track record for being intensely intimate and seriously fun-filled\, allotment-swing-acoustic trio The Magic Beans have an ear for a quirky cover and the imagination to take it in a completely new direction. Their rootsy originals draw influence from folk\, jazz and world music traditions and sit comfortably alongside the eclectic songs that they cover and their unique way of reimagining them. \n“The Magic Beans trade in transformation. That is\, they distill the essence of unlikely pop songs with just a supple string bass (Matt Owens\, the best in the business) and lyrical acoustic guitar (the tasteful Ulrich Elbracht)…The pair interweave seamlessly\, and\, most important of all\, leave lots of room for singer Zoe Kyoti. SUMMARY:Acoustic@Davenham
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD IN AID OF BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH \nWith Graham Bell\, Racing Demon\, Arthur Marshall\, Bitter and Twisted \n‘Acoustic @Davenham is an evening showcasing some of the best acoustic/roots music from the Cheshire folk scene in the uniquely intimate surroundings of Davenham Theatre. \nGRAHAM BELL\nGraham Bell is a singer/songwriter originally from the North East of England. He takes the rich cultural heritage of the region to weave songs with humour and pathos with a gritty undercurrent which reflects the hardships endured by his forebears. \n  \nRACING DEMON\nAfter a lengthy period of mutual admiration at Sale folk club\, Simon Eales and James Cawley eventually pooled their talents and became Racing Demon. With many shared enthusiasms\, they gradually expanding their repertoire of well-crafted interpretations of material by a wide spectrum of artists –  in the process becoming staples of the South Manchester/Cheshire folk club scene –  their live stripped-down combination of voice and guitar earning them considerable acclaim. But always keen to develop\,and experiment they expanded this basic format to record the album ‘Take The Money And Run \n\, aided and abetted by North West folk legend Arthur Marshall.’ \n  \nARTHUR MARSHALL\nArthur is a folk musician of long standing (though more often sitting\, these days)\, known for playing an  entertaining mixture of serious and humorous songs\, mostly written by himself. Sometimes these have choruses and participation is always welcome\, but not compulsory! \nHe has played for many years both on his own and in bands\, performing music ranging in styles from Cajun and zydeco to Irish music\, while also running\, playing in\, and calling the dances for several ceilidh and barn dance bands. \nHe plays mostly guitar\, melodeon and fiddle; however\, several other more unlikely instruments for a dyed-in-the-wool folkie\, such as saxophones\, trombones and euphoniums\, occasionally make an appearance – you can never be quite sure… \nBITTER & TWISTED\nBitter and Twisted are a folk combo comprised of long-time songster Lizzie Rosenfield and her accompanist Dave Giles. Their eclectic musical influences range from contemporary folk and blues to the more traditional\, all entwined by decorous vocal harmonies and dextrous guitar accompaniment. \nLiz has trodden the boards for many years as a promoter within the folk world and as a shy artist and is founder of the Cheshire Folk Club. Her stature among fellow artists is well known\, indeed is unmissable! Lover of a ‘girlie song’\, Liz has gratified many and disappointed few. David’s voice washes like an ocean over Liz’s broad vocal beach\, lapping close to her but never going further than an invitation for a paddle. His tones wind around her ankles\, wetting her toes as she retreats\, succumbing to his melody as a lover at the nape of her neck\, and they make sweet music as they splash among the musical waves. \n  \nTickets £12.50 from our Ticket Shop at Ticket Source \nThere will be a raffle in aid of Brain Cancer Research \nDoors open 18:45 \nMusic at 19:30

SUMMARY:Jazz Ben Crosland`s Threeway
DESCRIPTION:‘THREEWAY AT TWENTY’ \nThreeway came into being in May 2004 over the breakfast table after Waterman\, Lodder and Crosland had\, the previous evening\, played at a charity event at the home of two of Crosland’s closest friends. The feeling was that there was real compatibility between them and something new and exciting could emerge within the context of a chamber jazz trio without drums. \nOver the course of the ensuing 19 years\, the band has recorded three albums\, Conversations\, Songs of the Year and Looking Forward\, Looking Back\, which have all garnered significant critical acclaim and received airplay on a number of radio stations including BBC Radio 3\, Jazz FM and UK Jazz Radio. Threeway have played festivals and club dates across the country\, engaging audiences with their attractive brand of melodic\, fresh sounding\, subtle jazz\, the material largely written by all three band members\, all the while developing the intense interplay between the players that so characterises the group’s identity and sound.       \nThreeway’s music is heard to best advantage in the concert setting. Accordingly\, this is an ideal group for ‘listening’ jazz venues\, arts centres\, music festivals and concert societies. \nThe band is celebrating its 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion\, it has recorded an album of new compositions with guitar legend John Etheridge as their special guest. The album\, HARKEN!\, will be launched at the Buxton International Festival on 8th July 2024 and Threeway will be touring throughout the year as a trio and also with John as their special guest. \n  \nSteve Waterman (Trumpet/Flugelhorn) is an in demand soloist both in UK and abroad. He has recorded and toured with John Surman’s Brass Project and the Carla Bley Big Band and has worked with a host of other artists including Vince Mendoza\, Tony Coe\, Mal Waldron and Colin Towns. He has recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums in his own name. \nSteve Lodder (Piano/Keyboards) is a highly regarded sideman for many international and British musicians including Andy Sheppard\, Nana Vasconcelos\, George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra\, Sarah Jane Morris\, John Harle\, Carla Bley and Monica Vasconcelos. He has been musical associate with Paul McCartney on the ‘Standing Stone’ and ‘Ecce Cor Meum’ projects.  \nBen Crosland (Bass)  is one of the north’s most experienced jazz musicians\, having been leading bands for over 30 years. He has worked as a sideman with many leading US and UK soloists including Jean Toussaint\, Ken Peplowski\, Harry Allen\, George Masso\, Henry Lowther\, Stan Sulzman\, Frank Ricotti and John Etheridge.     \nMedia Quotes \n“The ensemble playing has the togetherness that only comes from top musicians who know each other well and think as one. Everything is clear and precise yet full of delicacy and feeling” Dave Gelly\, The Observer \n “Three stellar musicians…Crosland’s compositions are often quite captivating\, the reactions and interplay between Crosland\, Waterman and Lodder as near to perfection as anyone could want” Peter Vacher\, Jazzwise \nLinks \nDropbox – https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/a3otkkzf3shaj799p5viq/AImV4HgxRgmY9HcY40pbSvg?rlkey=98legvcmrevyl36pg9v7byovm&dl=0 \nSoundcloud – https://soundcloud.com/jazzcat1951/sets/harken/s-tk8dZN3c6Kn?si=f780304f38e8435090e2fab4e8867655&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing \n================================================================================== \n\nThe box office is able to take bookings for one gig at a time\, but do make a note of the dates which are of interest to you during our forthcoming season so that you can make your bookings at the appropriate time. \n\n\n\nBookings :  email jazz@davenham.co \n\n\n\nPlease do not assume that your places are confirmed unless you have had a response from J@D and\, if you have not\, please contact us again \n\n\n\nOR \n\n\n\ncall Keith on 07990 703 787 \n\n\n\nDoors & Bar 7.30pm   Gigs start @ 8pm   Tickets £13 unless stated \n\n\n\nIf you are suffering from Covid symptoms please do not attend and in any case advise us if you are unable to attend for any reason. SUMMARY:Music - Vinny Peculiar Band with guest Common Hall
DESCRIPTION:Images (C) Gel Gee\n\nVINNY PECULIAR BAND\nVinny Peculiar [aka Alan Wilkes] grew up in Worcestershire and trained as a nurse before signing to Manchester cult label Ugly Man records [former home to Elbow]. He’s since released many albums of literate autobiographical pop music over a twenty+ year career touring band\, solo and duo shows in the UK\, Ireland\, Europe and the US. Variously described as \n\n“an under sung national treasure” (UNCUT)\n“a warm- hearted Morrissey” (Q Magazine) and\n“the missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough” (Irish Times)\n\nPast work associations include Bill Drummond (KLF) and his various bands have included ex members of The Smiths\, OASIS\, Aztec Camera & The Fall. He’s written and recorded as Parlour Flames\, the band he formed in 2013 with ex OASIS rhythm guitarist Bonehead. \nThe Davenham show will reflect the set list played at a recent near sell out show at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room – covering a number of albums from his back catalogue – with emphasis on his most  recent release. \nLINE-UP \nVinny Peculiar [Alan Wilkes] Acoustic / Electric Guitar / Lead Vocal\nRob Steadman Keyboards / Vocal\nAdam Webb Electric Guitar / Vocal\nJim Gee Bass Guitar / Vocal\nPaul Tsanos Drums \n“A hugely talented musician who is right up there with Elvis Costello\, Ray Davies and Jarvis Cocker\, Peculiar should be placed on a pedestal” (Sean Hanan\, Hi Fi + Magazine). \n“A well-measured introduction to an under sung national treasure” (UNCUT MAGAZINE). \n“The missing link between Jarvis Cocker and poet Roger McGough and some of the wittiest lyrics this side of Wreckless Eric” (IRISH TIMES). \nCOMMON HALL\nOpening the night will be Common Hall (aka Robert Williams) – originally from Clitheroe\, Lancashire – Robert’s an award-winning\, acclaimed author beyond the day job\, and in this case a gifted singer-songwriter nudged out of self-imposed performing retirement. \nHere’s part of a review of a recent gig as written by Malcolm Wyatt taken from his website https://writewyattuk.com/ \nOpening number ‘We Were There’ gave off a Robert Forster vibe\, but I soon changed my mind and felt within a few songs he was closer to his namesake’s Go-Betweens accomplice\, Grant McLennan. Either way\, there was an understated yet sharp story song element\, highlights including ‘My Town on TV’ and ‘As Broken as you Think’\, first delivered with past act The Library Trust\, while ‘The Meeting’ and ‘Golden Island’ – the latter more barbed wire folk – were maybe more where he’s at now\, seemingly fragile yet increasingly acerbic\, his songs stripped to the bare bones. Prime examples were the bitter yet measured ‘Hope This Hurts’ and ‘They Don’t Sing for Me’. \nDoors: 7:30pm\, Music at: 8:00pm Close: 10.15pm [ish] \nTickets \n£15 via Andrew Whalley now at paypal.me/andrewwhalley1 or txt 07510853589 to arrange payment \n£16.50 online from 01/08/2024 https://www.wegottickets.com/event/615043
