Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat is a melodic, cinematic jazz quintet led by Leeds based saxophonist and composer Emma Johnson.
Gravy Boat is a band that write and perform melodic, accessible jazz in performances that weave music and stories with “characteristically Northern warmth and charm.”
In reviews of their debut album, Worry Not, Gravy Boat have been described as ‘one of the most refreshingly imaginative and perfectly configured acts in contemporary Jazz.’
Since then, they have toured nationally, welcoming audiences returning to live music with stories, warmth and melodic, spacious compositions that allow each band member to shine, and celebrated the one year anniversary of Worry Not with a limited edition vinyl release.
In 2022, Emma created Northern Flame, a set of new work for Lancaster Jazz Festival’s Evolve Commission supported by PRS Foundation, which premiered at the festival in September as the culmination of an incredible weekend of music.
In 2023, this developed into the band’s second album, Northern Flame, inspired by the light, resilience and (often quiet) strength of Northern women, both past and present. Northern Flame is set for release on the 3rd November, 2023, and will be supported by a tour comprising of both festival and jazz club appearances across the England and Wales.
