Davenham Players are an amateur drama group based at Davenham Theatre, owned by the group. We aim to present at least three major drama productions every season. Besides our own company, our theatre also hosts regular monthly Jazz evenings, visiting drama productions by professional and amateur groups, youth productions and other general arts events.

You can see a list of our productions from the very first one in 1941 to the current date HERE.
A few years ago, we made a plan to upgrade our outdated audience toilet facilities and to create a brand-new foyer. Completed in January 2020, this was the first phase of our extension project. Phase 2, building a totally new ground-level bar/meeting room in the yard is now in planning ready to go ahead once funded. Click HERE to see a photo gallery of how the extension progressed.
Davenham Players Drama
The Davenham Players have a long history, having started off as Davenham Church Players in 1941 and produced amateur drama on stage continuously since then. We aim to stage three main productions at our theatre each season.
The last pre-pandemic productions were:-
May 2019 Hidden Gem at No. 59 – members researched the history of the theatre and presented the results in our own show.
October 2019 The Steamie by Tony Roper – set in a Glasgow wash-house, four housewives chat about their individual stories. With live musical accompaniment and songs.
December 2019 Davenham Debuts consisting of two one-act dramas written and directed by two of our members.
March 2020 Waiting for Gateaux by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood – a light-hearted comedy about the worst health club in the country with members who just want to get away from something or somebody – until a sudden snowstorm forces them to confront their demons.
Members Evenings and Socials
For people interested in drama, we hold regular monthly Play Reading socials usually on the first Thursday of the month. A play is chosen, possibly one we are thinking of staging, and everyone gets a chance to read. A hot cuppa and biscuit are provided and there is the chance for a natter. Check out our Events Calendar for the date of the next Social. We welcome newcomers who are prepared to join in our activities. You don’t have to be an aspiring actor, just have a desire to help put on a show. So, come along and see us at a Play Reading or at a show. See our GET INVOLVED page.
A series of Stage Masterclasses have been held at Davenham over the last 12 months or so. The classes, led by professionally-trained actors Tom and Flic Barry, are held in the theatre, each covering one aspect of acting and presenting a show. A charge is made for attendance, reduced for Club members. Check out our diary, Facebook or Twitter for dates of future classes and other club events.
Another venture was a series of weekly Storytelling Workshops run by Flic Goodman. A professional storyteller herself, Flic offered to help select and develop members’ own stories so that each was able to present the finished article at a final show to the public. Both the participants and audiences found this a rewarding venture, with some very heartfelt tales emerging.
The organizers of jazz@davenham are separate from the Davenham Players and have been renting Davenham Theatre for their gigs for about three years. Both organizations work closely together to ensure the drama and jazz events fit well in the same space. jazz@davenham aim to choose a wide variety of styles of bands but also bring back ones that have gone down well with Cheshire audiences.
